The irony that a word meaning ‘the ability to last over time’ is a trendy buzzword is not lost on us. At Mara Elephant Project (MEP), ‘sustainability’ means that we are defending African elephants to increase their chances of survival.
Elephants’ intelligence, memory and strong social bonds make them an ideal catalyst for all conservation work. The killing of elephants not only threatens an iconic species, but it also results in the erosion of the variety of life on Earth.
One of the best investments someone can make to secure the future of life on our planet is to protect elephants and their habitats.
MEP’s approach to do this has evolved and adapted over the last 15 years from a single anti-poaching unit to a thought leader in the conservation sector. We invest in developing skillsets for future conservationists, understanding threats and being a catalyst for change at a larger scale by influencing policy and making data driven decisions for the deployment of resources. MEP is committed to setting the standard for conservation work by taking a data driven approach and relying on cross-disciplinary collaboration to solve challenges and engage a new generation of thinkers from around the globe. MEP values hope and maintains an optimistic view that a solution will be found in this century that promotes the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife.

Surely Rawlings first started donating to MEP because of her love of animals. As a prized Rottweiler breeder and horse enthusiast, elephant protection just made sense to Surely. While alive, the total amount of her annual contributions was the same size as our average annual revenue for a single donor.
Then, during COVID, Surely started thinking about her long-term impact and included a charitable bequest to MEP in her will. In 2024, almost 10% of MEP’s total revenue was from just two estate gift distributions, one of which was Surely’s. She knew that MEP’s strong culture of philanthropy and intentional capacity building ensured that her gift.
This estate gift gave us both something priceless; it sustained Surely’s love of animals and gave MEP a chance to look up and breathe as we follow our planned path into the future to see elephants not just surviving but thriving in the wild.
