Pushing Herd to Safety

March 2017 Helicopter Report

The Karen Blixen Camp Ree Park Safari helicopter is an essential tool to Mara Elephant Project’s operations. Funding the helicopter is of the upmost importance for keeping MEP moving toward our mission. We flew 280 hours in 2016 and, due to an increase in human-elephant conflict, we plan on surpassing that in 2017. Operation in Loita Hills by Wilson Sairowua

The Loita Forest, commonly known as Naimina Enkiyo, is home to elephants during the dry and rainy seasons. The isolated area has seen a steady increase in poaching every year and on January 15 a carcass was reported by Kenya Wildlife Service.  After investigating, the cause of death was considered poaching, which pushed Mara Elephant Project to deploy a rapid response team of rangers in the Loita area as well as our intelligence team warden to reconnaissance the area. A Word About MEP Fundraising

MEP had some very exciting fundraising achievements to report in the first quarter of 2017. First, we’d like to thank Alice Yu, a guest at MEP partner Richard’s River Camp, for her donation towards the collaring and monitoring of an at risk elephant in the Loita Hills area. This area of the Mara is currently experiencing high levels of poaching and needs closer monitoring to protect the elephants there.
